Privacy Policy
Effective Date: August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Unrest (“Unrest”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use unrestdu.in, the Unrest mobile application, and related services (together, the “Services”). By using the Services, you agree to this Policy and our Terms of Service.
1. Who We Are
Unrest is a campus community platform intended for Delhi University students and related university users. Contact: contact@unrestdu.in. Instagram: @unrest.du.
2. Information We Collect
Depending on how you use Unrest, we may collect:
- Account & profile data: email (including college email where provided), display name, username, college, course, year, hometown, bio, avatar/photo, and similar profile fields you choose to share.
- User-generated content: posts, comments, votes, messages, signals, activity listings, suggestions, reports, and other content you submit.
- Communications metadata: chat membership, delivery/read-related timestamps, and similar operational fields needed to run messaging features.
- Device & notification data: device type/platform, push notification tokens, and notification preference flags so we can deliver alerts you enable.
- Usage & diagnostics: approximate app activity, crash/error logs, and performance data to keep the Services secure and reliable.
- Optional contacts (only if you choose): if you use “find friends,” phone numbers from your address book may be hashed on-device for matching; we do not store your full contact list as a browseable directory.
- Optional location (only if you choose): limited location data for specific features (for example certain Corridor modes), used only while the feature needs it.
3. How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Create and operate your account, feeds, profiles, and campus communities.
- Enable messaging, signals, activities, and other connection features.
- Send transactional notices and, if you enable them, push/in-app notifications about activity relevant to you (for example signals, comments, or campus broadcasts).
- Moderate content, investigate abuse, enforce our Terms, and protect users and the platform.
- Improve product quality, fix bugs, and prevent fraud or spam.
- Comply with law and respond to lawful requests.
4. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share information:
- With other users, as needed for the feature you use (for example your display name and college on a post, or profile details visible to people in an activity chat).
- With service providers who process data for us (such as hosting, authentication, databases, analytics, crash reporting, and push delivery), under contractual obligations to protect it.
- For legal and safety reasons, if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect rights, safety, or to comply with applicable law.
- In a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, subject to appropriate confidentiality safeguards.
5. In-Person Meetings — Important Privacy & Safety Notice
Unrest is an online platform. We help students discover and message each other. We do not organize, host, supervise, verify in person, or take responsibility for any offline meeting between users.
- If you choose to meet another person you encountered through Unrest (including through posts, profiles, Corridor, activities, chats, signals, or any other feature), you do so entirely at your own risk.
- We do not conduct criminal background checks and cannot guarantee that any profile, photo, college affiliation, or statement is accurate or that a person is who they claim to be.
- You are solely responsible for decisions about contacting, meeting, traveling with, or sharing personal details with other users.
- For your safety: prefer public places, tell a trusted person where you are going, and leave (and report/block) if you feel unsafe.
- To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Unrest and its operators, affiliates, and agents disclaim liability for any injury, loss, damage, dispute, crime, or other harm arising from online interactions or offline meetings between users — whether or not arranged via the Services.
- Nothing in this Policy limits rights or liabilities that cannot be limited under applicable law.
If you believe you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first. Then report the user in the app and email contact@unrestdu.in.
6. Push Notifications
If you enable notifications, we store a device push token and related preference flags to deliver alerts. You can disable notifications in your device settings or in-app settings where available. Disabling notifications does not delete your account.
7. Data Retention
We retain account and content data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Services, resolve disputes, enforce our Terms, and meet legal obligations. You may request account deletion by contacting contact@unrestdu.in; some records may be retained where required for security, moderation, or law.
8. Security
We use industry-standard providers (including Firebase) and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; you use the Services at your own risk regarding residual security risk.
9. Children’s Privacy
Unrest is intended for university students who meet the age requirements in our Terms (including being at least 16). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below the applicable minimum age. If you believe we have, contact us to request deletion.
10. Your Choices
- Edit profile information in the app where available.
- Control notification permissions in system settings.
- Report or block users who behave inappropriately.
- Request access, correction, or deletion of personal data by emailing contact@unrestdu.in, subject to legal limits.
11. International Processing
Our infrastructure providers may process data in India and other countries. By using the Services, you understand your information may be processed outside your state or country of residence where data protection laws may differ.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Effective Date” above will change when we do. Continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised Policy. Material changes may also be communicated in-app or by email where appropriate.
